Phase Correction using 183 GHz Radiometers during the Fall 1998 CSO

چکیده
We report the performance of the 183 GHz radiometer system for the CSO-JCMT interferometer during the October 1998 run. The phase correction using the radiometers produced the rms phase uctuations by a factor (a factor of ve less in signal loss due to decorrelation) and achieved a corrected rms path length uctuation of 60 m under a moderately good atmospheric condition (2.2 mm of PWV). We also o er several suggestions for the future MMA radiometer system that should result in signi cant improvements.

ALMA Memo #303 Water Vapour Radiometers for ALMA
The JCMT-CSO single-baseline interferometer was the first to demonstrate phase correction using the 183 GHz line, using equipment built by Martina Wiedner, Richard Hills and colleagues. Only a limited quantity of data were gathered but the results (ALMA memo 252) were encouraging and suggested that even an uncooled system could provide effective phase calibration at submillimetre wavelengths. S...
متن کاملALMA Memo 352 - Design and Development of 183GHz Water Vapour Radiometers
This memo describes the plans for the development of the prototype 183 GHz radiometers for ALMA. It is planned that such radiometers will be used to correct for the phase errors introduced by water vapour in the atmosphere. One radiometer will be mounted on each of the antennas and will provide real-time measurements of the brightness temperature of the atmosphere at frequencies near the 183 GH...
متن کاملRadiometric Correction of Anomalous Refraction
We propose a scheme to measure and correct anomalous refraction effects for millimeter wave antennas. A radiometer tuned to the 183 GHz atmospheric water vapor line scans the atmosphere above the aperture of an antenna to determine the spatial derivative of the refractive index. In an array of antennas, such as the MMA, it would be used simultaneously to measure the phase delay correction for t...
متن کاملMemo 209 : 183 GHz radiometric phase correction for theMillimeter
Radiometry can be used to correct the wavefront distortions of millimeter and submillimeter signals introduced by the irregular distribution of water vapor in the Earth's troposphere. By measuring the emission due to water vapor along a line of sight it is possible to estimate the corresponding electrical path length. A correction system based on the strong water vapor transition at 183 GHz is ...
متن کاملALMA Memo #588 Inference of Coefficients for Use in Phase Correction II: Using the Observed Correlation Between Phase and Sky Brightness Fluctuations
By observing bright and compact astronomical sources while also taking data with the 183 GHz Water Vapour Radiometers, ALMA will be able to measure the ‘empirical’ relationship between fluctuations in the phase of the astronomical signal and the fluctuations of sky brightness around 183 GHz. Simulations of such measurements assuming only thermal noise in the astronomical and WVR receivers are p...
